Welcome to Rene's section of the @FOXPOP website.
This personal site is designed to reflect my interests in mobile computing. I regularly use laptops in my work, but my main interest is in smaller, handheld machines such as the NEC MobilePro range. I also use the Pocket PC, and have recently begun to explore the area of 'smartphones' with a Treo. If you use the buttons along the top you can visit the various sections, find out some more about me, and contact me.
A TALE OF TOTES Or .... Finding
a stylish, functional laptop bag in a man's world! (October 2004)
When it comes to laptop bags, it is definitely a man’s world—or at least unisex. Every day I tote my laptop and various peripherals and documents to work in a Tumi slim laptop bag that is only sold by stores catering to Apple users. In the Tumi Store it’s sadly part of a luggage set. It’s black, strong, very slim yet with enough room for my computer, peripherals, PDA cables, cellphone cables, AC adapter… you get the picture. Plus it cost less than $100! The problem? It’s definitely a man’s bag—no question about it..........
ADD ONS AND
GOODIES - contemplating
the wide range of add-ons and peripherals that can help you achieve the ultimate
goal of turning your PDA into a mini-laptop.
(October 2004)
Over the past three years I’ve collected quite an array of PDA peripherals in hopes of achieving the goal of using my PDA as a mini-laptop. Over time I tried out many keyboards, styli, cases, and power peripherals. Like Goldilocks I always found collection of add-ons either too large or heavy or not useable enough to make sense. And time and again I ran into two limiting factors between my PDA and its life as a mini-laptop: the PDA’s internal memory and processor speed (and how processing resources are allocated). Even with memory cards to handle the bulk of the storage load, the PDA still needs internal resources to handle active processing tasks as well as the processes that run in the background. But it didn’t stop me from trying, and much of the time I’ve succeeded.
